Until the end of last month Prof Wood was chair of the European Strategy Forum for Research Infrastructures (ESFRI). He will describe the background to the formation of the first European Roadmap for research infrastructures and how it is now being updated. He will also look at the challenges of realising these projects and with respect to his own experience of chairing the International Steering Committee for the European X-ray Free Electron Laser in Hamburg and also at the large issues surrounding the e-infrastructures necessary to support these developments.
