Résumé / Abstract

Generalized Parton Distributions (GPDs), as their own name convey, are generalized objects describing nucleon structure. GPDs correlate the position and momentum distributions of partons inside the nucleon. Therefore, they provide richer information about the nucleon structure than the well known form factors and parton distribution functions. GPDs are accessible via exclusive reactions, where all particles in the final state are identified. In this thesis, deeply virtual Compton scattering (DVCS) and deeply virtual π0 production (DVMP) are discussed. The thesis is divided into three parts: data analysis, development of a detector, and a short preview of a new scintillator material. With an 11 GeV electron beam and a proton target at Jefferson Lab, a precise DVCS and DVMP experiment in the valence quark region was performed in Hall A. The data analysis and preliminary results of this experiment are presented in the first part of the thesis. An upcoming experiment in Hall C will give more constraints on the extraction of GPDs. For this new experiment, a neutral particle spectrometer (NPS) is under development. In the second part of the thesis, simulation studies and hardware developments for the NPS calorimeter are presented.
Finally, the radiation hardness of a new glass scintillator is shortly discussed. This material, which is in an early stage of development, is one of the candidates for the calorimeters of a future Electron-Ion Collider (EIC).
