The photo injector test facility at DESY in Zeuthen (PITZ) was built in order to test and optimize electron sources for low emittance beam applications, like the European XFEL. The first phase (PITZ1) included the characterization of the electron gun which is currently running at the VUV-FEL, as well as a full parameter optimization for low emittance beams. In 2004, the PITZ2 phase started with the goal to study the conservation of low emittance beams and to prove that the beam parameters needed for the XFEL operation are reachable. In the talk, the results of the PITZ1 phase will be summarized and the project progress of the PITZ2 phase will be presented together with the plans for the forthcoming years.
